Who Built Machu Picchu?

by Jillian

Was Machu Picchu an army fort or a place to hide from enemies or was it a city like others in the Inca Empire? Why is it so famous?

The builders of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu probably fits the description of all the factors you ask about. It apparently did end up being a hideaway during the Spanish conquest and surely was fortified and guarded. But apparently it was built by one family of the ruling class for other reasons.

The Incas, though, followed the path of all the other great empires of the past.

At the peak of the Inca Empire, their dominion covered a huge area greater than the size of Europe. But they are no more.

Machu Picchu apparently was a stronghold built for one of the royal families. The power that the ruling class held over the others was evident in the amazing architecture used. Huge stone weight many tons were brought from a distance up a very steep mountain side and hewed to fit together so close that a knife blade cannot be inserted.

This represents the same power exercised by ruling families in all kingdoms, from the Ming dynasty in China to the Greek and Roman empires with examples like the great pyramids and great wall of China.
