Polo In Peru?

by Rob Hampson
(Durban, South Africa)

I have always been interested in finding out if polo is played in Peru (I'm sure it must be) and how good it is compared to the other South American countries.

I am personally from South Africa and have had polo in my family for generations.

It is common knowledge that the South Americans are the best riders and best polo players in the world... Especially the Argentinians!!!

But I've never heard anything about Peruvian polo.

So, do they play? What is the level of polo? And do they have polo resorts?

Polo in Lima

I just spent 4 months in Lima and one of my key activities were to improve my level of play. Guillermo Li a 7 goaler player and his brothers run an excellent polo school at the Cortijo Polo Club south of Lima.

Actually the President of the polo club in Lima used to play professional polo with Prince Charles in the U.K. and the level of play is pretty high.

Polo in Peru

One of my earliest memories is watching polo being played in Lima. I must have been around 5 or 6 years old.

Currently, the Federacion Deportiva Peruana de Polo is the organization that covers this sport.

The main club is the Polo Club of Lima. Other than that, I don't have more info on polo in Peru, unfortunately, as forms of polo go way back to the earliest records of sports in various parts of the world.

Horsemanship in general has been part of the culture of Peru and Peru is probably best known among aficionados for its Peruvian Paso breed of beautiful horses as well as Peru's fine leather saddles and tack.
