Discover Peru's hidden treasures

Sandwiched between Ecuador and Colombia, luscious Peru is made up of 25 regions, covering a whopping 496,225 square miles of land. Unique amongst other South American countries, Peru caters for both the commercial tourist and the thrill-seeking backpacker.

There are countless things to do and see, and each part of Peru is different, whether you're looking to trek around a city of architectural masterpieces or just have a chilled afternoon at a pretty impressive nature reserve.

The capital of Peru is the great metropolis Lima City, nicknamed the "city of kings". Lima City is essentially the doorway to the country, and it offers a marvellous opportunity to step back into Peru's history, with museums, a colonial construction and plenty of ancient ruins.

Another of Peru's great attractions is the deep, blue Pacific Ocean, where you can take part in a range of different aquatic sports, or simply lay back and soak up the rays.

For the more adventurous types, the ancient citadel of
Machu Picchu is a must-see. Located between two jagged peaks, Machu Picchu is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, attracting more than 40,000 visitors a year.

Visitors are able to see a range of Incan buildings from royal mausoleums to farmers' lodgings. Sunrise at Machu Picchu is especially magical and has to be seen to be believed. All in all, this expedition is well worth the investment and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Just don't forget - if you're looking to do any adventurous activities, make sure you take out appropriate insurance. Travel insurance from Insure and Go includes automatic cover for over 50 adventure sports and activities.
