I love being in the right place at the right time!

It doesn’t happen often, but one of those moments actually took place in Peru, nearly five years ago.

That would be the night that Machu Picchu was announced as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

In July 2007, I traveled to Cusco, Peru for the first time to volunteer at an orphanage. I had the weekends off, so on my first weekend I excitedly made plans to visit Machu Picchu. I paid for a tour and traveled to the town of Aguas Calientes, which is the closest town to Machu Picchu.

Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, I went through some stressful moments when realizing that I had accidently burnt the cable that would have recharged my camcorder battery. I guess I was too careless concerning the change in electric voltage.

After a stressful hour, I was finally able to get some batteries for the camcorder.

In a bad mood and tired from the whole ordeal, I then went off to explore the small town.

Upon arriving in the main plaza, I saw that a stage was being set up and people were beginning to gather around.

I asked someone what was going on and they told me that Machu Picchu might be announced as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World!

I was filled with excitement as I had heard about this possibility, but had no idea that the announcement would be made on the weekend that I was traveling to Machu Picchu! I sprinted back to my hotel to grab the camcorder (thankful that I had a new battery) and returned to the plaza to wait.

The plaza was full by the time the names began to be announced.

We all waited tensely and I had the camcorder rolling when Machu Picchu was officially named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

The plaza immediately exploded in an uproar! Balloons were everywhere, people were screaming, others were crying.

The policemen and security guards were jumping up and down, as well as the professional cameramen. Everyone was so happy and proud and I couldn’t help but join in their happiness.

When I decided to visit Machu Picchu, I had no idea that I would end up in the middle of such a historic moment.

That trip was definitely more than I could have asked for.

I will never forget the feeling of entering Machu Picchu on its first sunrise as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World!
