That's because they are relatives of the camel. Smaller than a camel, the llama has been used by Andean peoples in much the same way - as a beast of burden - for centuries. Llamas can carry a decent sized pack or bundle weighing up to 75 pounds (35 kilos). They are very hardy, living and foraging well in the cold highlands of the Andes as well as at sea level. Typically, however, the llama and its relatives in the Peru, the vicuña and guanaco, these domesticated animals are found at high elevations, up to 14,000 feet at least.
