June 10, 2011 - Puno, Peru - Road Blocks Continue
by David Schneider
The Aymara people continue protesting several issues in the area, one of which is another proposed mine that will affect negatively the local population. The DINOES, a Peruvian policing force, has a contingent of 500 troops on the spot to keep the bridge at least partially open. Some other routes in the area are also closed. The Banco de la Nacion among other businesses remained closed. If you had plans of going to Puno, it would probably be best to change those and choose a different place to go. Peru offers MANY attractions that are just as exciting and picturesque!
