Home - Inca Civilization - Inti Raymi Inti Raymi Festival in Peru - Cuzco TourFind out how to really enjoy the Inca Festival of Inti Raymi! New features of this Cuzco tour (Cusco) and holiday stun you with colors and costumes of the Andes.
Although the Incas were conquered by the Spanish led by Pizarro back in the early 1500s, the people continued many of their customs. The Spanish tried to stamp out the religious festivals but many were absorbed into the Catholic celebrations. Inti Raymi was revived many years ago, and this festival, known as the Festival of the Sun, is a pageant not to be missed. What is the Inti Raymi in Peru? The original festival was a religious ceremony celebrating the Inca god Inti. The earliest records we have of the original festivity was recorded by the Spaniard Garcilaso de la Vega.
De la Vega wrote that the Inti Raymi celebrated the winter solstice and the beginning of the new year in the Andes. Since Peru lies in the Southern Hemisphere, its winter new year begins 6 months before the new year in the Northern Hemisphere, that is, around June 25th. Where does the Inti Raymi Festival Take Place? Each year, the Inti Raymi is restaged near Cusco (alternate spelling is Cuzco) at Sacsayhuaman, an amazing Inca structure with impressive Inca architecture of huge, perfectly hewn stones. It has become a major tourist attraction and is highly recommended. If you can make your trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu in the month of June, definitely add the Inti Raymi Festival to your tour.
