Best archeological sites in Peru

Can you please recommend other amazing sites to put on my "must see" list when I visit Peru next year.

Everyone thinks of Machu Picchu first but it does get busy from what I've read so I'd really like to put some equally wondrous sites on my list of things to do in Peru.

Great site by the way!

Since there are over 70 major archaeological sites in Peru, a list of the 10 best is somewhat personal.

Huaca de la Luna, Peru

Hi Helen. As you mentioned, Machu Picchu is the most well-known of the impressive ruins in Peru, and, if you haven't seen them yet, should definitely be in your plans. Get a good guide because you just won't see many important features on your own.

However, Peru has an incredible number of other fascinating sites. As we grow, we will be covering some of them.

Just to mention one, since it is the news today, is Huaca de la Luna, of the Moche
Civilization
.

Huaca de la Luna is 4 km from Trujillo, one of the main cities of Peru. The World Monuments Foundation (WMF) just alloted one million dollars to Peru for its restoration, the largest amount ever donated to a Latin American project.

With this investment, this site will soon be even more attractive to visitors. That said, even now it is very impressive and well worth a visit.
