Ancient popcorn discovered in Peru
Posted on 18 January 2012 - Smithsonian Institute People living along the coast of Peru were eating popcorn 1,000 years earlier than previously reported and before ceramic pottery was used there, according to a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences co-authored by Dolores Piperno, curator of New World archaeology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and emeritus staff scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

Heavy Rains in Cusco
There have been heavy rainfalls in several areas of Peru, causing some flooding and damages.
Cusco (Cuzco) reported a damaged bridge and a lot of mud and debris washed into some sections of town.
January is noted for a lot of rain in Cusco and not the best time for a visit.
However, there are no further reports at this time that any tourist activities have been affected.

Ancient cave paintings found in Peru
The president of the Cave Art Peruvian Association, Gori Echevarriareported the finding of cave paintings depicting humans, animals andgeometric figures (circa 8-12,000 years old) in the province ofChurcampa, located in the Peru's central Huancavelica region.
Echevarria said six cave paintings were identified in a 20-meter stonewall which depict humans in hunting positions. The cave is located atsome 3,200 meters above sea level in Torongana mountain.
The 'Quilcas', which is the native name for this art form, are paintedin red, white and black and are believed to be at least 8 to 12,000years old, the archaeologist said.
"This finding confirms the great cognitive development of ancient Peruand establishes a reference its pictorial tradition. Most important isthe variation and extension of the motifs and scenes," he added.

Air Controllers' Strike in Peru - Flights Uninterrupted
There are no delays in national or international flights, according to the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio.
Although the strike of air traffic controllers began early today, take-offs and landings continued normally at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport.
At the present time, there are no delays in flights in Lima or elsewhere in Peru.
A contingency plan went into effect, causing the striking workers to complain that foreigners were being allowed to control flights in and out of Peru.
The strike was to last for 72 hours according to the striking controllers.
