Inside-Peru Newsletter, Issue #012 - Peru - Peaceful or Passionate?
October 26, 2010

Hello

Peru - Peaceful yet Passionate

Peaceful yet passionate are words that you don't usually see together.

But both of the qualities can be found in the same person and, in this case, in the personality of Peru.

Like most people worldwide, the Peruvian has a normal desire for happiness. One of the requiremnts for that elusive feeling is peace.

For that reason, a normal person living in a town or pueblo anywhere in the world - including Peru - is not likely to desire confict, whether it be with his neighbor or with a bordering country. David and Lin Schneider

At the same time, Peru is a passionate country.

That's also reflected in human nature, and Peruvians are no exception.

Although the classic description of a "Latin personality" stressed this quality as the main one; ie, "fiery Latin temper," "passionate Latin termperament"; this, of course, is really a product of culture and upbringing rather than some sort of inborn inherited quality.

These two qualities - passion and peacefulness - are brought into juxtapostion in Peruvian life and literature.

Mario Vargas Llosa, recent winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, masterfully describes the play of these emotions in his vivid descriptions of Peruvian life.

So is Peru a more passion-filled country than others?

Not really. The difference lies mainly, perhaps, in that the Latin culture does not suppress its feelings to the extent that perhaps other cultures, such as "reserved British," or "stoic oriental," cultures.

Because of this cultural trait, it is typical in Peru to see people more raucous and exuberant when having a good time but quicker to show grief or sorrow in painful situations.

Emotions don't need to be hidden as much as in other cultures. The passions are there... but also the desire and dreams of peace.
