Inside-Peru Newsletter, Issue #010 - Peru - Land of Contrasts
May 07, 2011

Hello

Peru - Land of Contrasts

When Francisco Pizarro and his band of nefarious treasure-seekers arrived in Northern Peru searching for the famed gold mines, the land they first encountered was semi-tropical and moderately watered.

The bay where they originally disembarked is now named Puerto Pizarro, a few kilometers from the modern-day city of Tumbes (named after the Indian tribe he found in that region).

Tumbes lies in a zone of transition between the hot, tropical, steamy jungles of Southern Ecuador and the sere, harsh landscape of most of Peru's Pacific coast.

As Pizarro's foraging band of treasure-seeking plunderers traveled down the eastern slopes of the Andes to confront the Inca strongholds, Peru appeared a land of extensive desert and mountains with just a few small rivers bordered by high mountains.

Written accounts by early whalers and other vessels from the United States that visited the old ports of Peru such as Callao and Paita reflected the inhospitable conditions.

What many of the early explorers did not know was that a much greater part of Peru lying just beyond the semi-arid western slopes of the Andes - and not more than 250 miles from the coast in some places - was the vast and verdant Amazon rain forest.

Larger than the coastal deserts and the Andes Mountains of Peru combined, this Upper Amazon region of rain forest and giant rivers afforded an extreme opposite in climate in many respects.

Rather than sun-parched desert, the immense expanse of greenery and water provides today's visitor to Peru with a wide variety of vistas - from the quaint but productive fishing villages of the coast, through desert lowlands, towering mountains, and cloud forest, to the low-lying and lush tropical jungles.

An adventurous traveler in Peru has access to all these areas within a relatively short distance, making the variety of vistas one of the many reasons Peru has again been voted #3 destination in the world for travelers, 2011.

Peru is definitely a "Land of Contrasts."
Now, here are the latest additions to Inside-Peru.com, your choice in Peru Travel.
